Missouri Bill Taps Casino Revenue - 2004-02-24
After a dispute that divided Missouri universities, two Columbia lawmakers are trying to change the subject. Rep. Chuck Graham and Rep. Jeff Harris, both Democrats, this week introduced a bill that aims to provide new funds to all public universities by tapping casinos and people who work in Missouri but live in other states.

They would scrap a law that limits casino patrons to $500 worth of chips or tokens every two hours, increase the gross receipts tax on casinos and change the casino admission fee from $2 every two hours to $4 per day.

But Spirit Mountain Casino, Polk County's answer to more popular gaming destinations, manages a rustic but spiffed-up feel that attracts large crowds to its well-appointed property -- a healthy portion of them from the Portland area -- and keeps them coming back.

Metro area visitors account for "about 40 percent of our folks," says Marketing Director Adam Henny.
