Governor Against Casino Gambling In Memphis - 2004-02-24
Governor Bredesen says there should be no expansion of gambling in Tennessee for up to ten years. In conference call from the National Governors Association meeting in Washington yesterday, Bredesen said casino gambling is "not the solution'' to Memphis' economic troubles.

House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh (NAY'-fee) says Bredesen's position would have significant weight in any legislative debate on casinos. Lobbyists for Save the Pyramid are pushing a bill that would permit the Memphis arena to be converted into a casino after the Memphis Grizzlies and the University of Memphis move their basketball games to FedEx Forum next season.

Fire At Casino Site Sends Smoke Clouds Skyward - 2004-02-24
A fiberglass swimming pool slide being built at the Seminole tribe's casino property near Hollywood caught fire at about noon on Monday, sending thick clouds of black smoke and bright flame skyward.

No one was reported injured in the blaze, which occurred on the Seminole reservation at U.S. 441/State Road 7 and Stirling Road.
