This weekend provides the last call for Oscar watching. Not for the winning films -- they'll hang around a little longer. Best-picture nominees "Mystic River" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" seem to be shoo-ins.

• "The Cooler," nominated for supporting actor (Alec Baldwin). He's terrific as an over-the-hill casino manager, but the film is in the hands of William H. Macy as a man so awash in bad fortune that it's contagious.

Tomorrow's assembly of the Taxicab Authority could result in fireworks as the administration and some drivers butt heads with operators when the board decides whether to mandate implementation of digital safety cameras.

"The last one caught was because of a Frontier (casino) surveillance camera. This is going to help some drivers. Even if it is debatable, it is going to help law enforcement catch the suspects."
