Detroit city council retracts on opposition to casino deal - 2004-02-28
A split City Council has voted to take back its objection to a contract to settle a lawsuit by the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians against two Detroit casinos.

The tribe, which has 430 associates and a casino in Watersmeet in the Upper Peninsula, filed suit in 1997, claiming its constitutional rights were violated when the city issued license preferences to MotorCity and Greektown casino ownership groups.

Critics continue to take a stab at Cieslewicz - 2004-02-28
Mayor Dave Cieslewicz continues to receive hits from individuals and organizations who are embittered over the overwhelming defeat of the proposal to turn the DeJope bingo hall into a casino. But the ongoing carping harms the credibility of the critics more than it does the mayor.

Considering the unanimous vote to refute the casino, and looking at voting patterns around the county, its clear that a high number of union households voted in opposition of the casino proposal.
