The chance of another Indian casino in Connecticut is intensifying a split between struggling cities that anticipate the project may answer their dreams and enhance communities that see it as a nightmare.

The long-simmering dispute has taken on urgency since the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation got federal recognition in January, clearing the path for the tribe to bargain with the state to launch a casino.

The 110-acre site the casino covets has been dredged since the 1980s. If demand doesn't change, the pit can be mined an additional two years, Mr. Imler explained.
Dredging is "low impact" compared to other mining, Mr. Imler stated.
