Slots Opponents Step Up Attack - 2004-02-05
Anti-gambling forces promised yesterday to reenergize their campaign against slot machines in Maryland as a coalition of lawmakers and preachers promised to become more united and prominent in their opposition.

A loosely organized assortment of about 50 legislators, clergy and community activists staged a rally in Annapolis to announce an effort to build a grass-roots network by lobbying 1.6 million Marylanders with e-mails.

"We are the voice of opposition," said Del. Anthony G. Brown (D-Prince George's). "We will not sit back and hope this issue stalemates like it did last year."

More debt concerns legislators - 2004-02-05
With a last-minute defeat on legislation legalizing slot machines just a few months behind him, Gov. Ed Rendell announced a $22.3 billion budget that holds out the hope of almost $1 billion in property tax relief but contains an approximate $2.8 billion in new bonds Tuesday.

Though they say the proposal is likely to change drastically, local legislators expressed concerns over the new debt, which must be approved by voters if they pass the state House.

"Usually you get the money first and then you spend it," state Rep. Jacqueline Crahalla, R-150th Dist., said.
