Schaghticokes Recognized; A Long Raod to a Casino? - 2004-02-07
The surprise decision Jan. 29 by the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs to formally recognize the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation (STN) may clear the way for a casino in Western Connecticut.
Over two decades after starting the recognition process, the STN learned that it had finally prevailed. Less than an hour later, Attorney General Richard Blumenthal vowed to appeal what he called an "outrageously wrong" decision, saying the agency "got it right the first time," in its December 2002 preliminary ruling that the tribe's petition should be denied because of gaps in heritage.
