Harrah's misses out on Illinois casino proposal - 2004-03-15
Isle of Capri Casinos Inc. on Monday won the right to buy a Chicago-area casino permit, defeating rival Harrah's Entertainment Inc. of Las Vegas and Illinois developer Neil Bluhm.

The dormant license is now possessed by bankrupt Emerald Casino Inc. and its purchase must be authorized by a U.S. bankruptcy judge. Emerald's creditors, were in debt $120 million, and the state of Illinois, which looks to close a budget deficit, would divide the proceeds from the license sale, court papers claim.

U.S. wages quiet battle against casinos on Internet - 2004-03-15
Federal prosecutors have begun trying to curb the increasing popularity of online gambling in the United States by silently threatening legal action against American companies that do business with Internet casinos and sports betting operations based to the exterior of the country, lawyers and industry executives claim.

The probe into the activities of media, public relations and technology companies depends on a legal concept that holds that the U.S. businesses, by offering advertising and other services that back Internet gambling, are "aiding and abetting" online casinos.
