Group petitions to back governor's attempts to settle casino compacts - 2004-03-09
A crowd of roughly 125 community activists, local elected authorities and representatives of statewide associations like the Sierra Club gathered on the north steps of the state Capitol Tuesday to back Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's efforts to renegotiate deals with California's casino tribes -- and request that the governor include their concerns in the bargaining.

It also came as Schwarzenegger tries to undo crucial aspects of those settlements, especially the current compacts' inability to cut the state in on a portion of the casinos' revenues.

From settlement to casinos, book relays Vegas' past - 2004-03-09
Conveniently for its centennial celebration in 2005 is a new book "Las Vegas: The Fabulous First Century" by ex-Redlands local Judy Dixon Gabaldon.

It's a tale of the Paiutes, the Mormons, the water rights, the federal government building Boulder Dam, the headline entertainers, the strong racial discrimination during the years and, of course, the casinos, the gambling, the mob influence and a city that today hires a huge service trade for the 36 million visitors who come annually.
