Communities request Schwarzenegger to limit casino effect - 2004-03-09
About a hundred representatives of 10 communities from across California asked Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Tuesday to require Indian tribes to provide compensation for the impacts of booming casinos on traffic, crime and the environment.
She wrote one of a number of initiatives offered for the November ballot, hers requiring tribes to pay the customary corporate state income tax in exchange for being permitted to operate 3,000 slot machines, up from the current 2,000 machine cap.

Hundreds of tribe members convene at Capitol to protest gambling measures - 2004-03-09
American Indians crowded the Capitol steps Tuesday to protest a measure that would prohibit slots in Minnesota by 2006 if tribes decline to renegotiate their gambling compacts with the state.

Tribal associates claim their compacts were bargained in good faith and they shouldn't be pushed back to the table. Shutting down slot machines would immediately close each casino in the state, taking with it many jobs, McCarthy stated.
