Regional officials are in negotiations with a Las Vegas casino operator about building a new convention center. It would feature a hotel and a casino, Deputy Mayor Anthony Adams said on Wednesday.

Officials from the Las Vegas Sands Corp., the corporation that runs the Venetian Resort and Casino and the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas, visited Detroit on Monday to discuss a facility that would replace the aging Cobo Center.

A proposal to build the state's first nontribal casino in the Portland area would need to clear huge political obstacles that cast uncertainty on the project's future, gambling industry observers say.

Two Lake Oswego entrepreneurs revealed last week that they plan to seek voter approval for a huge casino and entertainment complex that would ultimately include as many as 3,500 electronic gambling terminals.
