Gala blames government as it unwinds casinos plan - 2005-01-06
Ambitious plans by the bingo hall operator Gala Group to build eight new casinos across Britain have fallen apart after Tessa Jowell, Culture Secretary, imposed controls on the number of establishments allowed under new gambling legislation. Gala and its US partner Harrah's announced yesterday that their $1 billion arrangement, announced in June 2003, was being unwound because the Government performed a surprise U-turn last month and capped the number of new casinos at 24 by 2012.
